Oh,
the dreaded compost pile!
When
I was a kid I so dreaded the times mom would ask me
to take out the after-dinner scraps to the backyard
compost pile. ANYTHING! Anything but the
compost pile! That 50-yard dash from the backdoor
to that dirt pile against the fence in PITCH dark
was the spookiest place on earth. I just knew
the boogieman was gonna catch me!
Did
the boogieman exist? Was he real? You BET he was...in
my mind!

We
think that we're running from something "out
there". But in truth we're only on the run
from something "in here", that part of
us that we never want to face.
We're
all running from something and toward
something else. The thing we run from is
our boogieman. That belief
left over from long, long ago that still screams to
us about how not up-to-snuff we are. It drives our
day...and month...and life! It's the belief about
ourselves that keeps us from participating
fully and earnestly in our play, in our career,
in our love.
"You're
so stupid" is what the little girl carried into
her adult life. It shows up around every corner as
she keeps her mouth shut during intellectual conversations
and as she avoids places or people who remind her
of her intelligence (or lack of), and as she slams
her husband who says anything that hits her button
called "stupid". Her sister on the other
hand who was told the same message became a student
for life as she becomes obsessed with proving to the
world that she's not stupid. Running
from stupid, running toward smart...never ever
able to catch up or outrun either.
"You're
so skinny" were the cruel words that still
ring in the mind of the woman who never thinks of
herself as beautiful and it shows up in her choices
of what she wears and how she thinks about herself
and who she marries.
In
the process of running from the monster
we can't smell the roses along the path.
"You'll
never amount to anything" drives the young
man to over-working, just to prove to the world that
he will amount to something.
